Geyerhalter’s latest documentary is a visually stunning look at our global waste problem. Human-made waste surrounds us everywhere and at all times, be it on the mountain peaks of Switzerland, on the coasts of Greece and Albania, in Nepal, or in the Maldives. It depicts the Sisyphean task of waste disposal: collecting, shredding, burning, and burying. The term “Matter Out of Place” has been borrowed from the Burning Man festival, which takes place annually in the middle of the Nevada desert. At the end of the event, the participants celebrate with a collective cleanup, also known as “MOOPing”.
