This coming-of-age comedy follows the concept of neighborhood in the Kurdish-Syrian border village of a little boy named Sero. When a fanatic teacher from Aleppo arrives to “arabize” the village, the boy’s friendship with his beloved Jewish neighbors is put to test. Director Mano Khalil, who has fled to Switzerland, revisits his childhood in Syrian Kurdistan, turning his experiences into an intelligent coming-of-age comedy. Skillfully he deconstructs the nationalism, ethnic segregation and the anti-semitism propagated by the Syrian rulers.
