Cutting Through Rocks by Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni

Jury Statement

We selected a film that portrays a woman who challenges a system designed to contain her. It follows a protagonist who works within her community and pushes against norms that restrict girls and women in their choices.

Every action she takes is a clear statement. The film reminds us that political change often begins with one determined voice …. and a motorcycle.

The motorcycle becomes a symbol of access to public spaces that is often denied to women.

Her voice carries a spirit of determination and courage that stays with the audience long after the film ends.

The film that achieves this is Cutting Through Rocks.

Congratulations to the directors Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni, and to the main protagonist, Sara Shaverdi

You rock!!

Austrian Competition

Winner: Personale by Carmen Trocker | Honorable mention: Generations of Images by Johannes Gierlinger

Prize Austrian Competition - Jury's statement:

The winning film is impressive not only in terms of its cinematography, but also in terms of its subject matter. It gives space to those who all too often remain invisible. In an unemotional and empathetic manner, it provides insights behind the scenes of the tourism industry and highlights how comfort is linked to invisibility, human rights and (often migrant) labour. However, the film not only addresses exploitation, but also community, subjectivity and dignity, and shows people beyond clichés.

We congratulate Carmen Trocker and the entire team behind ‘Personale’ on a sensitive and powerful film that avoids trite appeals and platitudes, takes its protagonists seriously and, with its restrained narrative style, offers the audience plenty of room for reflection. Particularly noteworthy is Małgorzata Szylka's camera work, which documents simply and respectfully, without frills, how washing machines run, laundry is spun, floors are scrubbed and towels are folded day after day.

Despite everything the film shows, it is an encouraging work that leaves viewers with a sharpened view of their environment.

Honourable Mention:

We would like to give special mention to the film ‘Generations of Images’. Johannes Gierlinger's film has a powerful pull that captivates the viewer and takes them on a journey into the world of film. With great sensitivity, he weaves together archive material, 16mm footage of the present and the voices of young Albanians to create a poetic essay on memory, ideology and the traces of history.

The film invites the audience to develop their own questions and to pay close attention to the nuances in which history continues to have an impact. Gierlinger's precise montage shows how images speak to each other across time and how each generation finds new meanings in them that arise from their respective temporal and cultural perspectives.

Tata by Lina Vdovîi and Radu Ciorniciuc

Jury Statement

The camera in Tata serves two purposes: as a recording device, it becomes a weapon against abuse in the workplace and exposes the mistreatment of a Moldovan worker who is beaten and cheated out of money at an Italian winery. At the same time, the camera opens up a space for encounter: Lina Vdovii, a journalist and the worker's daughter, films herself and her conversations with her father, who himself physically attacked her as a child.

Without resorting to black-and-white thinking and beyond simple attributions, the film shows the complexity of perpetrators and victims. The personal does not become navel-gazing, but broadens the view to transgenerational trauma, precarious working conditions in the migrant labor market, and, last but not least, ossified images of masculinity, without ever slipping into didacticism.

Hi mom, it's me, Lou Lou by Atakan Yılmaz

Jury Statement

With Hi mom, it's me, Lou Lou Atakan Yılmaz presents an emotionally very powerful short film, a deeply touching exploration of a search for identity amid guilt, loss, and social oppression. The story of a young drag queen who has to return to their conservative parents' home following a traumatic event is related with compassion as a portrait of society at large in Turkey, which continues to reject the LGBTQIA+ community in all of its multiple expressions.

The domestic context is depicted as a restrictive, almost suffocating space where there is neither room for individual freedom nor for any form of self-expression. Lou Lou's inner conflict — a conflict marked by shame, self-denial and the desire to free themselves from the expectations of an authoritarian father — is shown with sensitive imagery.

The film delivers a sharp analysis of diametrically opposed worldviews, while holding space for the mother's legacy as a source of empathy, love, and freedom — qualities that guide Lou Lou on their own journey of self-discovery. Her invisible presence becomes the driving force behind a long overdue personal reconciliation.

The short film has a captivatingly clear artistic vision and intimate narrative style, taking a courageous look at a reality where the struggle for personal freedom has become an act of resistance. Hi mom, it's me, Lou Lou is a deeply moving work that speaks powerfully to the rich diversity of human identity.
