About us

Vienna’s first International Human Rights Film Festival, this human world, is a platform for filmic and critical discourse, a space of encounter and dialogue, a meeting point for innovative local and international filmmakers. We believe cinema is not only an art form in which experiences are recorded, performed, and created, but also an opportunity for viewers to step out of their comfort zones and into discussions about topics residing outside their everyday realities.

The 17th edition of this human world will take place in Vienna, from November 27th to December 8th, 2024.

Our movies

The movies screened at this human world are showcased in an International competition schema consisting of four different sections and a number of thematic cornerstones (Schwerpunkte) curated by the festival team. The culminating competitions are broken down into the International Competition, Up & Coming Competition, Austrian Competition, and Exp:∆n:ded Shorts Competition.

this human world spotlights full length documentaries, narrative feature films, shorts, animations, and experimental movies which, in one way or another, thematize human rights issues. These are films that encourage people to scrutinize and reflect on their views; that uplift “micro” and “macro” struggles for human rights; and that reveal systems in which people are exploited and human rights are neglected. In addition to screenings, our program contains lectures, workshops, talks, panel discussions, and performances.
