Synopsis

City of Mermaids dives into the vivid world of the Femminielli, an ancient, gender-fluid identity deeply woven into the fabric of Neapolitan culture. Both revered and marginalized, the Femminielli embody a duality of male and female elements in a complex dance of tradition and spirituality. As Naples modernizes, these figures confront new social norms that threaten their existence, yet steadfastly preserve rituals like the Marriage of the Femminielli and pilgrimages to Montevergine. Blending surrealism and vibrant visuals, this documentary captures Naples in all its color and resilience, revealing the unique role of the Femminielli.
